Jemez House Press Release

WHITE ROCK, NM – The Jemez House Thrift Shop in White Rock has closed due to the loss of our lease. We are hoping to find a new location for the shop that fits within our budget. The thrift shop has been at 13 Sherwood (units 2&3) since 1991. All funds generated by the sale of goods donated to the Jemez House Thrift Shop are given in scholarship money to New Mexico students who have, at some point, resided in a New Mexico group home. Over the last ten years, we awarded $435,560.00 to qualified students to assist them in pursuing their post-secondary educational goals. We are currently providing financial assistance to nine students who are enrolled in vocational programs or college. They can receive funds for up to five years.

Typically, about ten students per semester are supported by our monthly stipend. At present, we have a contingency fund that will enable us to support these students through their fall 2018 school/college semester and perhaps longer.

The Jemez House organization and the thrift shop are run solely by volunteers. There are approximately 60 volunteers who not only work in the store but clean, handle administrative duties, and utilize their own vehicles to haul away items that cannot or do not sell in the shop. Through the diligent efforts of the volunteers who run and manage the shop, we are able to divert tons of material that would otherwise enter the landfill. For example, we recycle electrical items, metal, plastic and cardboard.

Jemez House benefits many organizations. Clothes Helping Kids picks up donations from our shop weekly. Volunteers from Our Brother’s Keeper use unsold linens and blankets to make sleeping bags for the homeless. Many books have been donated to prisons, hospitals, and small communities that have libraries in need. One of our volunteers has been taking unsold children’s clothing to an orphanage in Mexico.

Since we are no longer open for business, you might consider donating goods to: Clothes Helping Kids at 505-266-2002, Big Brothers, Big Sisters at 505-438-9000 or Habitat for Humanity at 505-747-2690.
The Jemez House Thrift Shop Facebook page will be updated if and when we open in a new location.

Jemez House extends thanks and gratitude to the residents of White Rock and surrounding communities who have believed in our mission and supported the thrift shop since we began. We also appreciate the people who have donated money to Jemez House over the years. If you would like to donate, our mailing address is Jemez House Inc., P.O. Box 1043, Los Alamos, NM 87544. We are a 501c (3) non-profit corporation.
